Apart from his own projects like the piano-less quartet with Art Farmer (heard here on
our bonus album) and his Concert Jazz Band, Gerry Mulligan loved to make collaborative
small group records with other jazz masters. His association with jazz entrepreneur
Norman Granz and his recording labels gave him the chance to record special sessions
with some of his childhood heroes, and this album with Johnny Hodges is just one
example. Taped during one single session on November 17, 1959, the date took place
between the sessions that produced another celebrated “Mulligan meets” album: the
one with Ben Webster, which was recorded on November 3 and December 2, 1959.
