Jazz trio music with a unique profile: Hubert Nuss's trio CD The Book of Colours makes sublime play with tonal shades, tints and hues, enticing the music to dance, dazzle, and swing, offering up music of tremendous subtlety and sensuous strength. Well-known as a teacher at the music conservatories in Cologne and Berlin, Hubert Nuss’ students include Pablo Held; and Nuss has been honoured with a variety of musical awards. Nuss has consistently been critically acclaimed for the “beauty” of his recordings: the “Jazz Zeitung” praised the “beautiful sound” and “structural mastery” of his Pirouet CD Feed the Birds (2005). “Pictures of galaxies are unbelievable spectacles of colour,” says Nuss concerning Galaxy NGC300, and accordingly the music oscillates through a kaleidoscope of hues and tones. The sparkling colours of cathedral windows and precious stones as well as the paintings of such artists as Charles Blanc-Gatti and Tyrus are inspirations for Nuss. But the strongest past and present musical reference point for this jazz pianist and trained church organist is the spiritual world of another renowned church organist, French composer Olivier Messiaen, for whom colour laid at the heart of music.
