| Yusef Lateef’s 1959 album Cry! –Tender
(Prestige/New Jazz 8234) in its entirety.
As a bonus, we have added Lateef’s complete 1961
LP Lost in Sound (Charlie Parker PLP 814), which
features the leader playing the tenor saxophone
exclusively. Yusef Lateef was born William Emanuel Huddleston in Chattanooga,
Tennessee on October 9, 1920. Still alive at this writing at the age of 89,
he was one of the first Afro-American jazz musicians to embrace the
Islamic faith. Instrumentalist, composer and educator, he is also a
renowned spokesman for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community after his
conversion to Islam in 1950. Although his main instruments are the tenor
saxophone and the flute, he is known for his innovative blending of jazz
with Asian music. In addition to the oboe and bassoon (which are both
unusual in jazz), Lateef plays various instruments, notably the bamboo
flute shanai, shofar, argol, sarewa, and koto. The earliest of Lateef's
albums for the Prestige subsidiary New Jazz overlap his Savoy
Recordings. Cry! Tender was one of these early albums for New Jazz
recorded during this early period of Lateef’s music career. In 1959,
Yusef Lateef began using the oboe in his recording sessions and on live
dates. This album marks that occasion, and is thus a turning point in an
amazingly long and varied career. Our bonus album, Lost in Sound is an
enjoyable early '60s session from Yusef Lateef that captures the multiinstrumentalist
as he was beginning to break free from hard-bop and
explore more adventurous avenues. |
