In jazz circles the terms whiz kid and young lion are bandied about all too frivolously. Often they describe musicians who've been struggling at their craft for several years, and are finally getting a chance to step out from paying their "dues". Some of these lions are a bit long in the tooth when they finally receive their coming out party. So when a teenager steps into the jazz spotlight there are sure to be a few raised eyebrows and many a ruffled feather. At sixteen, Loren Stillman is destined to drop countless jaws. His excellent alto work on Cosmos sure doesn't sound like the work of a kid, but Stillman is one big anomaly. He has the deft touch to tackle Miles Davis ("Solar"), a fluid spirit evoking Charlie Parker ("Inner Urge") and a mystifying improvisational flare some old timers still search for ("Cosmos"). This sure doesn't sound much like a fluke, but a legitimate entry into the jazz world, and a much needed shot of very new blood. This kid is almost scary.
