This recording of 'Monkabilia" (one of Masahikoa Yuh's last sessions for his Why Not Label in 1984) recorded in New York was one of the rare occasions on which Don Pullen recorded solo and here the full range of his talents can readily be appreciated as he eagerly embraces the challenge of performing alone.

Always a percussive player, Pullen's style has been variously guaranteed to make your hair stand on end. The "hand" rolling" technique which he developed has been much studied and has had much comment from critics, but has never been fully understood.

The pianist was not all about "trick bags" and technique of course, as a sensitive reading of Round Midnight admirably reveals his lyrical side. Pullen's pyrotechnics, however are not without humour which constantly surfaces throughout the album on the Monk Tunes and one of the two Pullen originals here - the appropriately named Monk' Around. Here he reveals himself as a supremely sensitive, spiritual human being who never lost sight of his roots whilst being at the forefront of innovative, contemporary music.
