| “It’s probably my most personal album,” Jens Winther confides. “I always planned to
record an album of ballads one day. Now it just happened anyway, which is great.”
Two completely unrelated circumstances coincided in summer 2009, and the result
was Jens Winther’s “Love Songs.” Firstly, the cancellation of a planned recording,
where the trumpeter was involved as a sideman left a window of two days’ availability
at Studio P4, located in a former broadcasting center in Nalepastraße in Berlin. The
producer Ulli Blobel wanted to put the booked studio time to good use and called
Jens Winther to see if he would like to take over the leadership of this mentioned
recording. “Obviously I said yes – we musicians always need work,” laughs Winther.
Arrangements for the recordings were quickly made: for the first time in more than
thirty years of trumpet playing, Winther wanted to go into the studio as part of an
intimate trio with only piano and double bass. The theme of “Love Songs” was also
swiftly decided upon. “Chet Baker recorded wonderful love songs, Miles Davis too,”
says Jens Winther, who found the time was right to make his own contribution to
this tradition. “I had just fallen in love with a woman whom I hadn’t seen for twenty-
six years. We have a special relationship.” Winther wrote four new, magical love
songs in just two days in July. “I called the first one ‘Deep Summer Love’. The
second, ‘Vladi’, is named after the love of my life. She is a classical cellist from
Bulgaria. Then I took a few more of my favorite sentimental numbers – ‘Retrato Em
Branco’ by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Chico Buarque, and ‘You’ve Changed,’ which
became so well known thanks to Billie Holiday.”
The two days in the studio with his trio partners Pepe Berns and Tino Derado turned
into an impressive example of successful musical communication, something you
can feel in every note of this recording. “It was like going into a shop to buy a jacket
– you try one on and know straight away, ‘That’s my jacket.’ When things fit together
like that it’s just right,” explains the trumpeter. “Music is an extremely fragile affair.
I had already played ten hours by the time we got to the Michel Legrand number.
That was really strenuous. But seldom have you heard a trio, playing with such a
profound and sensitive feeling, where each note is selected with extreme carefulness
and sentivity.” Jens Winther derives the same kind of pleasure from “Love Songs”
that you would from a more or less unexpected present. And it is with unstinting
generosity that he passes on this gift – to you, the listener. |
