- Elliott Carter - A Labyrinth of Time: Elliott Carter, a lifetime citizen of New York City, represents almost a century of music history. He is considered worldwide as one of the most important living composers, rooted firmly in the European tradition. For him, the clash of European tradition and Amercican innovation is not an obstacle, but a source of inspiration. The creative period of his life spans more than 70 years. The respect he enjoys throughout the world not only applies to his work, but also to his enormous dedication to music culture.
In A Labyrinth Of Time, experts like Daniel Barenboim, Charles Rosen and Pierre Boulez give their visions on Carter's music. The film shows Carter's musical development and reflects his compositions in time. The city of New York is use as metaphor, because Carter describes his music as a reflection on the democratic society in which we live, where people have to cooperate and, at the same time, try to keep their own individuality.
- Arvo Part - 24 Preludes For A Fugue: 24 Preludes for a Fugue is the first authorized documentary about prominent composer Arvo Pärt to be released on DVD. A portrait made of precious moments recorded during three prolific years of the composer’s life, the film features rehearsals, premieres, seminars, meetings and recollections. Director Dorian Supin succeeds in revealing Arvo Pärt’s musical thinking. His work opens a door on the inner world of one of the most spiritually intense composers of our time.
The documentary is enhanced by excerpts from major musical works such as "Tabula Rasa", "Passio", "Fratres", "Orient & Occident", "Cecilia, vergine romana" and "Como anhela cierva".
- Philip Glass - Looking Glass: This documentary captures the overflowing energy and activity of one of today's greatest composers, Philip Glass, and allows us to follow him from New York to London and from Paris to Boston. He speaks about his beginnings, his moving to Paris for two years of intensive study with Nadia Boulanger, his meeting with Indian musician Ravi Shankar and director Robert Wilson who had a deep influence on his carrer. The film also shows him at work on the last details of his opera The Sound Of A Voice, directed by Robert Woodruff and conducted by Alan Johnson. Eric Darmon's camera, with its poetic shots and original framings, takes us for a musical journey into seven months of the life of the composer who, rising from the underground scene of the seventies, brought on a revolution in modern theater.
- Olivier Messiaen - The Crystal Liturgy: Olivier Messiaen (1908 - 1992) is, with Igor Stravinsky, certainly the most original phenomenon of 20th Century Music. Musical genius, Messiaen was an astouding teacher, a highly spiritual thinker, he lived through the century in perpetual wonder at the riches of nature, ideas and knowledge. Gathering for the first time the most beautiful shots on Messiaen, this portrait recreates this many-facetted engaging artist and makes us feel the colour of his music.
- Pierre Boulez - Eclat/Sur Incises: Eclat: Eclat is a real study of resonance written for fifteen instruments Pierre Boulez created in 1965, a glittering jewel of tightness and rationality, a riotously colorful mixture of open-form freedom and serialist order. Eclat (meaning to "burst out") is a kind of "concerto for conductor", where the musicians in the ensemble play semi-improvisational material prescribed within boxes in Boulez's score. Given this material, the conductor "composes" and controls the work via an elaborate and complex series of cues, directing the content of the music and deciding which musicians play when, as well as what they play. In this film by Frank Scheffer, Eclat is performed by the Netherland's Nieuw Ensemble conducted by Ed Spanjaard , coached by Boulez himself.
Sur Incises : in A Lesson by Pierre Boulez, the composer explains with warmth, modesty and infectious enthusiasm, the hidden architecture of Sur Incises, one of his most recent works, to an non-specialized young audience. On a number of occasions, Pierre Boulez has shown that he can come up with the right words and gestures to throw a light on complex musical scores. Here he demonstrates his teaching talents in talking about his work as a composer and offers a witty exposition of the musical movement that make up its construction. This master-class documentary is completed by a concert with Boulez conducting the nine soloists of the Ensemble Intercontemporain, who follow him with visible pleasure through the mysteries of this spectacular piece.
