| Recorded 11-12 November 1987 at CMC Studio in Rome, Italy, this quartet recording features Charlie Haden on double bass, Chet Baker on trumpet, Enrico Pieranunzi on piano and Billy Higgins on drums. Haden, who is given top billing here, is an American double bassist best known for his long-standing association with Ornette Coleman and his Liberation Music Orchestra of the 1970s. Haden, along with drummer Billy Higgins (also featured here) both played together Coleman’s 1959 groundbreaking The Shape Of Jazz To Come. The quartet is filled out with celebrated Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and the legendary Chet Baker on trumpet, making this recording a kind of ‘supergroup’ album. In fact each man is given a chance to showcase his skills through his own compositions or trademark pieces, beginning with Charlie Parker’s “Visa”, which gives each man a chance to solo, followed by Haden’s gorgeous “Silence”, Pieranunzi’s “Echi”, Chet Baker’s signature tune, “My Funny Valentine”, Thelonious Monk’s piano masterwork, “Round About Midnight” and closing with the jazz standard “Conception”. The album is also dedicated to Baker who had died by the time the album was released. |
