Rebel Roots is a formidable debut album from, a Chicago's young but incredibly capable drummer and band-leader Ted Sirota.

Fascinatingly, Rebel Roots, demonstrates as much Mingus as it does Marley, the common denominator being Sirota's enthusiasm for the underpinning political agenda that music has the potential to carry. What is music after all if it cannot reflect the mood and feeling of the times and its people?

Sirota's Rebel Souls are a stripped down, indigenous and articulate avant-garde post bop group whose agenda does not at any point devalue or water down the quality of the music.

"I want to play music that's 'free', music where people in the group can express themselves. I'm always thinking what if some kids from the projects walked in here or people who didn't listen to jazz all the time; would they be able to feel what was going on? I try to find a way, even if it's just by playing with a lot of emotion and feeling, that people can relate to."
