| Listening to this disc one is made to think of Ellington in his relaxed mode ('Paris Blues'; 'Javapachacha' etc). The arrangements carry that influence and quite openly I'd say, especially with 'In A Sentimental Mood' included in the repertoire. Mr. Catherine glides along and across the Brussels Jazz Orchestra with aplomb and to hear that trademark sustain against their wash of colour is a real pleasure. Occasionally he breaks out of the relaxed groove and gives us some more angular accompaniment, the end of 'Letter From My Mother' for example, but mostly he and the Orchestra are in a complementary mood. This is accomplished playing and arrangements of the highest order, just don't expect fireworks. Do expect pleasure. |
