| After completing a tour of Europe with the Miles Davis Quintet, John
Coltrane left the trumpeter in April of 1960, to form his own band. It
consisted at first of pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Steve Davis and
drummer Pete La Rocca. Their first gig was in May 1960 at the Jazz
Gallery, a club located in New York’s Greenwich Village. But Kuhn
left about a month into the gig, which made him the transitional pianist
in a transitional period. Coltrane expressed no complaints with his
playing but wanted a different sound for the band, which he felt
McCoyTyner could best provide. (Pete LaRoca would soon be replaced
by Elvin Jones, while bassist Steve Davis would relinquish the bass
chair to Reggie Workman before Jimmy Garrison joined at the end
of 1961, completing the lineup for one of the most important bands
in jazz history.) McCoy Tyner joined the quartet in June 1960 and on
June 27 a nearly complete set by the new quartet was privately
recorded by an audience member. Besides being the first preserved
collaborations of Trane and McCoy Tyner, these recordings are
important for two reasons. First, they present Coltrane’s first existing
performances on soprano saxophone. Second, the program performed
here is highly unusual for Coltrane’s live recordings. |
