The World Saxophone Quartet's original lineup had Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill, David Murray, and Hamiet Bluiett. They put out nine discs, and "Revue" is the third. Following the footsteps of "W. S. Q.", "Revue" helps set the pattern for WSQ's unaccompanied saxophone sound. The title track starts the disc off on a funky note. "Affairs Of The Heart" isn't as much balladic and birdlike. "Slide" is declamatory whlie "Little Samba" is another groovy song. "I Heard That" shows their brassy side, whereas "Hymn For The Old Year" is stately. "Ming" is a ballad, and "David's Tune" is episodic. The short closer, "Quinn Chapel AME" is hymnlike. Later quartet albums of original songs seem to follow these signature styles.
Regardless of the style of song, the other WSQ signatures are great interplay between the horns, and free jazz sections. WSQ fans will want this one, and if you'd like to be introduced to the WSQ, try "Revue" or "W.S.Q.". |
