Rare examples of the creative fire that the “free-jazz” movement ignited!
The 1981 Woodstock Jazz Festival was a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Creative Music Studio, founded in 1971 by Karl Berger and Ornette Coleman. Most of the tunes are standard pieces that have been played, recorded, and worked over in jam sessions countless times. However, to hear them transformed as they were by these artists on this day is to understand the primacy of improvisation over composition. The compositions are mere launching pads for free flights of spontaneous—often breathtaking—invention.
