Something Beautiful exemplifies Reed’s extraordinary songwriting and ability to deftly re-imagine some of the most remarkable tunes in the jazz, gospel and pop idioms. "This project contains songs from a longer list of songs I wanted to record, says Reed. "Regardless of the genre, if the melody grabbed me, I made note of it.
Reed, one of today’s most innovative jazz pianists, is joined by bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Rodney Green who serve as the ideal match for Reed’s intense and urging style. Their playing, Reed says, fuels his own energy on the recording.
Something Beautiful, produced by Willie Jones III, opens with "Sun Out, penned by saxophonist Lucky Thompson, and Dave Brubeck’s "In Your Own Sweet Way, on which Reed employs a 5/4 rhythm. Fans of Reed’s live performances will find familiarity with his re-inventions of Irving Berlin’s "How Deep Is The Ocean, and Rodgers & Hart’s "I Still Believe In You, each of which have been in Reed’s songbook throughout his career. Rock and pop fans may recognize Reed’s rendition of "Black Tables, originally heard on the "Grey’s Anatomy TV series and recorded by the band Other Lives; and Billy Joel’s "Honesty to which Reed gives haunting and velvety treatment. The trio also delivers the hard swing on Tony Williams "Citadel.
"Lift Up Your Hands To The Lord best depicts Reed’s philosophy and ethos as he’s currently Minister of Music at Los Angeles’ Agape Christian Fellowship. His rendition of the gospel tune, he says, "helps to fulfill a vision that I have for praise and worship music. Faith has become my muse and what is apparent to me in my work is an unwavering, undaunted resilience.
Something Beautiful closes with two of the pianist’s original compositions: the title track and "If I Knew You, a solo piano selection dedicated to Reed’s grandparents, whom he never knew.
"Something Beautiful is the record I've always wanted to make - especially sonically, says Reed. "As my concept becomes more crystallized, the overall sound follows suit. The eclectic nature of the tunes matches my personality precisely and I have Willie Jones to thank for believing in me from day one - long before I joined any bands or made any records. |
