Almost 50 years ago, Nat King Cole presented two albums that extended past his usual musical comfort zone, offering stunning and memorable renditions of classic melodies from Cuba, Mexico and Latin America. Today, veteran saxophonist/composer David Murray - a Grammy winner with over 150 albums to his name - pays tribute to those iconic sessions with fresh arrangements of songs from Cole's pair of Spanish language albums. Murray sought out authenticity with these arrangements, marrying classic melodies with his own personal spin. Whether it be Cole's signature "Quizas Quizas Quizas" or the breezy "Tres Palabras," Murray and his bandmates offer up a set that is charged with joy, including plenty of perky brass, dreamy strings and jaunty percussion. Besides the cover tunes, the album includes one original song - the grooving "Black Nat."

Grammy Award-winning composer/saxophonist David Murray revisits Nat King Cole’s beloved Latin repertoire, and the result is one of Murray’s most lush and purely pleasurable albums.

With over 120 albums to his name, the multiple award-winning David Murray is one of the most prolific and adventurous saxophonists, composers, and leaders in jazz and world music. This, his most accessible disc to date, was recorded in Argentina and Portugal, and features a fantastic large Cuban ensemble playing songs from Nat Cole’s hugely successful recordings of the same name. Released to unanimous acclaim by Universal France in Europe earlier this year. Hailed as a masterpiece, the disc generated a 22-city soldout European tour. Excellent liner notes by preeminent jazz historian Gary Giddins. Motéma’s US version includes exclusive bonus track “El choclo” featuring Argentinean tango vocalist Daniel Melingo, hailed by Britain’s Independent as “the man who’s making tango seriously cool,” as well as star Argentinean bandoneon player Juan José Mosalini.
