| A hundred years ago, Austrian-Jewish-Catholic composer Gustav Mahler died. To this date, no other contemporary composer has looked deeper into Mahler’s oeuvre than Uri Caine. Now, at the end of the 20th century, Caine adapts Mahler’s compositions with his knowledge of the decline of the Danube Monarchy, of Nazis and the Holocaust, and of the developments & origins of contemporary music. Among other highlights, the disc includes “Two Blue Eyes” featuring Jewish cantor Aaron Bensoussan, American poet Shulamith Wechter Caine (Uri’s mother), and an outstanding piano solo by Uri himself. |
