Mettle is veteran guitarist/composer Michael Musillami's sixth recording with his flagship trio featuring bassist Joe Fonda and drummer George Schuller. The music, including Musillami's first extended work, the eight-movement Summer Suite: Twenty Ten, is largely autobiographical, but the record itself celebrates the trio's 10th anniversary as a working unit. On Mettle, they form the core rhythm section of a new sextet, featuring special guests Russ Johnson (trumpet), Ned Rothenberg (alto saxophone and clarinet), Jeff Lederer (tenor saxophone and clarinet) and Matt Moran (vibraphone), created to fully realize Musillami's latest compositions.

I must start by declaring that I am a Musillami fan. The albums he made in the 90's are fantastic and the more recent trio recordings sublime. For me the real clincher in Musillami's music is his unique ability to be a modern player, happy to be involved in free improv or negotiating complex arrangements but above all SWING. For my taste his last CD, while being good, was a touch overwritten at times. Some of the tunes just seemed a bit fussy. Here that is definitely not the case. All these tracks swing and allow plenty of room for the excellent players to have room to join in the party. The tunes are great with an excellent opener allowing soloing over a brilliant guitar ostinato, a cool bluesy track and a long suite in 8 movements. I have no doubts in just saying: buy it!
