By the time this album was released in 1961, Art Blakey (now 40 years old) was working with a very prolific line-up featuring 'Jazz Messengers' Wayne Shorter (who would soon become the musical director of the group) on tenor sax, Jymie Merritt on bass, Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano. Trombone star Curtis Fuller, brought in especially for this album (and featured on his own composition 'Alamode'), soon became a working member of the Messengers as well. Interestingly, this flawless LP, featuring a superb version of 'Invitation' (a tune taken from the score to A Life of Her Own, a 1950 movie starring Lana Turner) and 'Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You' (a hit for Nat King Cole in 1944) is one of the very few Blakey recorded for Impulse!
