| One of the most in-demand pianists in jazz, David Virelles makes his Pi Recordings debut with Continuum, a collaborative effort with bassist Ben Street (Danilo Perez, Kurt Rosenwinkel), legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille (David Murray, Cecil Taylor), and Cuban folkloric percussionist/poet Román Díaz. Virelles’ compositions are inspired by Afro-Cuban religious practices; systems that include music, poetry, storytelling, dance, symbols, art, divination, and magic. He draws specifically from the rituals and myths surrounding the Abakuá, an Afro-Cuban secret society. Román Díaz helps bring that tradition to life, spinning poetry that speaks to the multi-layered fabric of Cuban culture. Virelles has become a regular performer at the Village Vanguard, and his work as a leader has garnered critical acclaim for its innovation and maturity. |
