Hot on the Heels of the 2011 Thirsty Ear release "Electric Fruit" comes a new studio effort by the troika of Weasel Walter (drums), Mary Halvorson (guitar) and Peter Evans (trumpet) lovingly entitled "Mechanical Malfunction". Whereas "Electric Fruit" was a crisp document of three-way virtuoso group improvisation, this new release features a different side of the band, marked by shrewly arranged and varied compositional elements. Fans of Walter's early punk/jazz writing will swoon over gnarly riff zones like "Vektor" and "Interface". Evans' twisted rhythmic writing is highlighted on several tracks and Halvorson's more linear/narrative approach to dissonance appears on the remainder. The album starts and ends with free music pieces, just to let you know where the band still stands, but the meat of the matter here is about whiplash improvisation within tight, unpredictable frameworks. Challenging, but refreshingly listenable, "Mechanical Malfunction" will drive your ears absolutely nutty with joy.
