| With a Grammy nomination under his belt and a torrent of contemporaries singing his praises (including Wynton Marsalis, who called him a "fantastic young singer"), vocalist Gregory Porter is poised to take the jazz world by storm. Before making a foothold in the jazz world, Porter held the leading role in the Broadway musical "It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues," and it's not hard to see why he found success in such a venue. Porter's voice is large and soulful, with a rich coffee depth that puts him at a crossroads between blues, jazz and R&B music. BE GOOD, his second release, finds the artist belting out choruses with velvety ease, be it the epic refrains of "Work Song" or the more subdued approach used for "Painted On Canvas." In each case, Porter's singing is framed in snappy jazz quartet arrangements of piano, bass and drums, with some brass in places. Finishing off the rousing set, listeners get an a cappella nightcap in the form of "God Bless the Child." |
